I am not able to load the YO testing slide
Correct slide loading is important to ensure an accurate result. Please follow these instructions to load the slide correctly:
- Make sure the sample is well liquefied (not thick or clumpy) after adding the pink powder by swirling if often.
- Make sure the sample is fully liquefied before adding it to the red dot on the slide.
- Ensure the triangle area of the test slide is filled completely (the whole triangle should be light pink). Watch closely as you fill the slide – the sample can be hard to see.
- If the sample does not liquify in 10 minutes, or the slide will not take the sample, wait an additional 10 minutes, and try again using the same slide.
- Ensure the slide is loaded “right side up” with your sample and is not upside down.
- Make sure there are no bubbles in the pipette dropper.
- Ensure the slide is clean after loading – there should not be overflow sample on the top of the slide.
- Make sure the slide is inserted entirely into the testing chamber.
- Do not touch the unit during testing.
I am not able to locate an expert or access other App features after testing
YO will connect to your device by direct WiFi during the testing process. At the end of the test, your original WiFi connection should be restored. If you are unable to contact an expert or access other App features once the test is finished, please follow these steps:

Sample Testing
Can I use the YO Home Sperm Test for Post-vasectomy testing?
The YO Home Sperm Test is optimized for fertility testing and reports motile sperm values above and below 6 million per milliliter. To avoid unwanted pregnancy after a vasectomy, you want to have a sperm concentration/motility of ZERO. Currently, YO does not give a value of ZERO and is therefore not recommended for post-vasectomy testing.
How long should I abstain before testing?
You should abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 7 days before testing your sample to receive an accurate result.
Should I collect my sample before starting the YO Home Sperm Test?
No. It is important to follow all instructions inside the YO application, including collection timing and other collection recommendations. Please follow YO’s direction from start to finish to ensure the most accurate result possible.
Can I use a condom or lubricants for semen collection?
Condoms and lubricants are not recommended for sample collection. They can impact the test results because they may contain spermicidal agents and other substances that may influence your sperm cells. Dry masturbation is recommended for the most accurate result.
Is it possible to collect a semen sample during sexual intercourse?
No. Samples collected during sexual intercourse cannot be used because test results may be adversely impacted due to the effect of the pH of vaginal mucous.
Can I use my phone or computer during the YO Home Sperm Test?
Do not use your device during the YO Home Sperm Test. Your device connects to YO by secure WiFi, and you will not be able to access the internet during parts of the test. If you try reconnecting to the internet, you will lose the connection to YO, and the test may fail. There are also risks of disconnecting YO from the power source or upsetting the sample if either your device or YO are moved during testing.
How long does the YO Home Sperm Test take?
Please allow at least 30 minutes to perform your test after reviewing the instructions. The actual analysis time is about 2 minutes, but the sample preparation process can take up to 15 minutes. To successfully run the test the first time and learn about your results, allow at least 30 minutes.
How much sample is required to complete a YO Home Sperm Test?
Only about 1/8 teaspoon of semen is required for YO testing.
How should the semen sample be collected?
Collect your sample by dry masturbation directly into the sample container provided in the YO Home Sperm Test kit. Do not use condoms, lubricants, or partners. YO results may not be correct if you do not follow these instructions.
How should I clean up after running the YO Home Sperm Test?
It is important to handle YO and the testing supplies correctly after testing:
- Throw away the used test supplies except for the YO device.
- Store the YO device in a zip-lock plastic bag between uses.
- Your phone or computer can be wiped clean with an anti-virus wet-wipe.
- Wash your hands.
Test Results
How accurate is YO Home Sperm Test?
YO is proven > 97% accurate in FDA clinical trials compared to laboratory testing. YO has also been validated by independent fertility centers and organizations around the world. Inaccuracies are generally caused by not following the step by step instructions correctly.
If I get a LOW YO test results does that mean that I’m infertile?
Your sperm motility and count can change over time. Therefore, YO recommends that you run the SECOND YO test one to two weeks later to see if your results are still LOW. If yes and you are having problems conceiving, YO recommends you seek medical advice with your YO results and video in hand to show your MD.
If I get a MODERATE/NORMAL YO test result does that mean I’m fertile?
Although the YO Home Sperm Test does not provide a complete evaluation of a male’s fertility status, Motile Sperm Concentration (MSC) in the MODERATE/NORMAL range does provide evidence of fertility potential, and YO Score provides a scale for reference of that potential. There are, however, other factors that can cause fertility problems that are not related to sperm.
If I have an infection or a sexually transmitted disease will it impact my YO Home Sperm Test results?
In the presence of sexually transmitted diseases causing bacteria and viruses such as Neisseria gonorrhea, cytomegalovirus (CMV), human papillomavirus (HPV), herpes simplex virus, and Chlamydia trachomatis your potential sperm motility may be affected. YO may report results in LOW MSC RANGE in the presence of sexually transmitted diseases or infections but in the absence of such disease or infections, your sperm could be in the MODERATE/NORMAL MSC RANGE. This is one of the reasons YO recommends you seek medical advice if both of your YO tests are LOW.
What if I make a mistake loading the testing slide, will it impact my test results?
Yes, mistakes loading the slide can impact your test results. Here are some guidelines:
What is MSC?
MSC or Motile Sperm Concentration is the number of moving sperm in 1 milliliter of your sample. YO is an important fertility test because it analyzes MOVING sperm. And, in ‘normal’ conception it takes a moving sperm to reach the egg.
Why is MOTILE SPERM CONCENTRATION tested?
In normal intercourse, sperm need to MOVE to reach the egg. Knowing if you have a MODERATE/NORMAL or LOW number of moving sperm is the most important parameter when assessing your fertility potential. YO will also provide an MSC quality ranking and a personal reference video, which can be shared with a professional if desired.
Why are two tests included in the YO Home Sperm Test kit?
Your sperm values can change over time. A “low” result today could be “normal” in a month or visa-versa. It is important to run your test at least two times – especially if you receive a LOW MSC RANGE result the first time. YO can also be used multiple times to monitor fertility improvement efforts over a longer period of time by purchasing re-test kits.
Why is the cut-off for MSC 6 million per milliliter?
The 6 million per milliliter MSC cutoff is established based on the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for motility and concentration, statistical modeling of over 100,000 cases, and scientific publications. For results above 6 million per milliliter, you will also receive a quality ranking compared to other men who have fathered a child.
Does YO report a full semen analysis?
SEMEN ANALYSIS OVERVIEW:
In cases of infertility, the man is a contributing factor in approximately 50% of cases. A semen analysis is conducted to test a man’s sperm count (concentration), moving sperm (motility), normally shaped sperm (morphology), and other parameters. One of the most important factors in achieving a pregnancy is the number of motile sperm in the sample. If the sperm cannot swim to the egg, natural pregnancy is not possible. The YO Home Sperm Test analyzes your motile sperm concentration (how many are moving) and sperm quality (YO Score) and compares your results to laboratory standards and to other men who have fathered children. You will also receive a video recording of your sample as part of the YO Test. Here is some more detail on each result and the reference ranges for normal vs. abnormal:
RESULT #1: MOTILE SPERM CONCENTRATION
Sperm cells need to move forward to reach the egg during natural conception. YO first reports whether your motile sperm concentration (MSC) is above or below a “normal range” of six million motile sperm per milliliter. The “normal range” of six million motile sperm is calculated by multiplying the World Health Organization (WHO) reference value for sperm concentration (15 million) times the normal reference range for sperm motility (40%). 15 million x 40% = 6 million. Although only one sperm cell is needed to fertilize an egg, six million motile sperm per milliliter is the cut-off or “threshold,” which determines the diagnosis of Low vs. Moderate/Normal MSC.
RESULT #2: YO SCORE
YO Score is a ranking of your motile sperm concentration (MSC) compared to other men who have fathered children. The result is 10 to 90 in intervals of 10. If your score is 20, you rank above 20% of fathers. If your score is 90, you rank above 90% of fathers. The higher your YO Score, the more likely you are to achieve a pregnancy in a shorter amount of time. YO Score is a reliable tool for monitoring MSC changes over time and the cornerstone of the fertility improvement tools contained in the YO Application.
RESULT #3: SPERM VIDEO
As part of the YO Home Sperm Test, you will receive a recorded video of your sample. The video offers a clear visual reference to complement your MSC and YO Score results. Videos are available for sharing with an expert, family, or friends if desired or kept 100% private inside the app for personal viewing.
General Product Information
Are tests results stored in the archive secure?
YO Home Sperm Test results are stored on your device in the YO archive only. They are offline from the internet and will not appear in your photo album or public folders. The results stay 100% private unless you choose to share them.
Can I share my YO Home Sperm Kit with someone else?
YO Home Sperm Test is intended for use by one person. Don’t share the kit contents with anyone, including family members. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), semen is considered a biologically hazardous material that can potentially transmit hepatitis, HIV, and other diseases.
Are there published scientific articles on YO Home Sperm Test?
Absolutely! Please Contact Us directly for more information on our FDA clinical trials and independent validation studies.
Can YO Home Sperm Test be used on other species?
Currently, YO Home Sperm Test is only optimized for human sperm.
If I want to run more tests can I order extra supplies?
YO Home Sperm Test can be used multiple times for fertility improvement over time. 2 and 4 test refill kits are available HERE.
Is YO Home Sperm Test easy to use?
In FDA trials, over 300 participants who had never run a YO Home Sperm Test before tested their sperm successfully by following the YO step-by-step instructions in the App.
Is YO Home Sperm Test FDA/CE approved?
Yes, YO was FDA and CE (Europe) cleared in 2016. It has since been approved for sale in almost all countries worldwide.
What is the advantage of YO Home Sperm Test compared to its competitors?
YO is the only smart device-based, FDA-approved home sperm test that reports MOTILE SPERM CONCENTRATION (how many moving sperm cells in 1 ml of your sample), ranks your sperm quality, and shows you a live video of your sperm. Other home tests report only CONCENTRATION, and your swimmers could all be dead or not moving, and you would get a NORMAL result. With YO, you’re testing the living motile sperm – the ones that can potentially create a pregnancy.
How was YO validated for accurate sperm testing?
YO Home Sperm Test is developed by Medical Electronic Systems, the world leader in automated semen analysis technology. YO was tested extensively in the MES laboratory for a period of three years. It was then tested by over 300 participants in FDA trials and by the Cleveland Clinic and other leading fertility centers independently.
